The
Salgados Lagoon (Lagoa dos Salgados), in the municipality of
Albufeira, is a shallow aquatic and coastal ecosystem. It also
comprises the system of dunes of Praia Grande, a pine forest and the
marshland of Alcantarilha.
It is a place of great geological and biological interest, due to its capacity to host a varied number of species of birds and flora. The wetland area of the lagoon is known for its varied vegetation typical of fresh and brackish water, from which the very characteristic reeds stand out.
It is an excellent place for leisure, for walking, jogging or bird watching, perfect to visit with the family. It has a wooden walkway along the coastal area and bird watching stations.
As for birds, the most common are the Cayman (porphyrio porphyrio) and the Long-legged stilt (himantopus himantopus), which are just some of the numerous species of birds that can be observed throughout the year.
